In this book talk, local author Wendy Vowell, will read from and discuss her newest book, “What Happened to Uncle Harold?” which is scheduled for publication in 2025. On Veteran’s Day in 2019, a press release announced the discovery of a WWII submarine, found off the coast of Okinawa in 1427 feet of water. The wreckage of the submarine, USS Grayback SS208 was far too deep for recovery so her crew will remain on eternal patrol at the bottom of the sea. Discovery of the Grayback re-opened old wounds for the families of these sailors lost at sea. This book talk will focus on one of these men, Sonar Tech Harold Leaf.

Joining Wendy will be a nephew of Harold, Gary Leaf, as well as a renowned historian of WWII submarines, Tom Bowser. Wendy, Gary and Tom will be joining us from Mobile Alabama, location of USS Drum Submarine Museum, to discuss the research and writing of this poignant and revealing history.
