ABOUT THE AMHERST NEIGHBORS’ BOARD OPPORTUNITY
The mission of Amherst Neighbors is to build neighbor to neighbor connections, provide access to services and information, and empower elders to maintain socially engaged lives while aging at home. We are a member-led, no-fee, non-profit organization that is currently focusing on virtual programs and events that support older adults in expanding their community during this COVID stay-at-home time. People may join as member, volunteer or both. When CDC recommendations and our judgment assess our environment to be safe, we will be offering services to members 55 and older.
AN is a one-year old organization with a current Board of nine members. We are holding our first election to expand our Board membership by adding two to four new members. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, the Board voted to postpone the first election and first Annual Meeting by six months. For this cycle, the term of office will begin January 1, 2021.
The values of compassion, connection, inclusion, respect and community underpin our activities and decision-making processes. We seek nominees who reflect the diversity of our community in representation, perspectives, skills and experiences. We invite nominations in the spirit of inclusivity and the recognition that diversity strengthens us.
BOARD MEMBER ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND BENEFITS
Role: The Board determines, implements, and reflects the AN vision, mission, and values, provides financial oversight, conducts fundraising, represents and advocates for the organization in the relevant communities, provides leadership for committees, ensures legal compliance, and monitors its own effectiveness.
Time commitment: Nominees should have the ability to commit for a two-year term. Currently, the Board meets via Zoom every two weeks. In addition to Board meetings, the member is encouraged to participate in committees, fundraising and other organizational activities. There is no term limit.
Benefits: Board members are part of a growing and dynamic organization that is enhancing the quality of life for our Amherst-Pelham older adults and broader community. Members support a social change movement that advances a positive perspective on aging and the contributions of our older population within our community. Members also have the opportunity to work with a passionate, committed group of people.
Nominees must be over 18 years old and a member of Amherst Neighbors or willing to become a member. Additionally, preferred qualifications include:
