About this event

Join Amherst Neighbors for a special program with retired Hampshire College professor, Dr.Aaron Berman, as he discusses material from his new book “America’s Arab Nationalists: From the Ottoman Revolution to the Rise of Hitler.” Dr. Berman notes that as entire Palestinian families perish in Gaza and conflicts continue to rage in much of the Middle East, it is important to remember that an alternative reality was once possible.
In this event, we will learn how in 1922 Elizabeth Titzel warned Americans that a disaster was brewing in the Holy Land and that Charles Crane tried, but failed to help Arab nationalists in Syria.

Dr. Berman’s research interests center on the history of nationalism (particularly Arab, Jewish and Palestinian nationalisms). For eleven years he served as Dean of Facultyand Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hampshire College.
