Julius Henry Groucho Marx was born on October 2, 1890, and died on August 19, 1977. He was an American comedian, actor, writer, and singer who performed in films and vaudeville on television, radio, and the stage. He was a master of quick wit and is considered one of America's greatest comedians. Groucho entertained Americans for seven decades and gained much acclaim for his interview/quiz show, “You Bet Your Life,” which was a top-rated television show from 1950 – 1961.

In this program, Sanford (Sandy) Roth will first give a brief overview of Groucho’s life and then discuss the history of “You Bet Your Life,” which will include many interesting facts about the show as well as video clips where Groucho is seen rolling his eyes, raising his eyebrows and twirling his ubiquitous cigar in response to a contestant’s remark. It was when Grouch left the “Marx Brothers” and went out on his own with “You Bet Your Life, that he became an icon of American comedy and humor.

Sanford Roth is a member of the Amherst Neighbors Board of Directors and is the chairperson of the programs committee. He is a retired educator having spent the last part of his career as a reading specialist, teaching students in grades K-8 how to read, as well as doing many workshops where he trained classroom teachers in the art of teaching reading. Sandy first presented this program in a seminar with Five College Learning in Retirement. He is pleased to have the opportunity to share this program.
