About this event

One of the few things we are all likely to associate with the Middle Ages in Western Europe, besides King Arthur and the Round Table, and Knights in Shining Armor, is the tradition of medieval churches, that many of us have visited if we’ve traveled in Europe, or will likely recognize from books or their Neo-Medieval descendants in the US, such as St. Bridget’s in Amherst.

Though it is true that these three universal social hierarchies can be traced in interesting and significant ways to the Later Middle Ages, seeing how they have evolved since that time, gives us interesting insights into our struggles with each today, and how useful it is to recognize the ongoing impact of each.

About the speaker: Dr. Gary Tartakov, Professor Emeritus, is a cultural historian currently writing on the Later Middle Ages, will talk about how our current social struggles around the social hierarchies of race, class and gender, can be seen in their earlier guises when we examine the forms of the magnificent medieval church remains and the practices associated with them.
