Welcome to Amherst Neighbors!

Our MISSION is to create neighbor to neighbor connections, provide access to information and services, and empower elders to maintain socially engaged lives while aging at home. We do this through a variety of virtual social and educational opportunities.

We believe in reciprocity and interdependence. Everyone has something to give and we all get by giving. Interdependence means we need each other to thrive and survive in our homes and communities.

Our members come from all backgrounds and live in a variety of locations - apartments, condominiums, retirement communities, single family homes, homes shared with friends or family, and temporary housing solutions.

Acupuncture: Your Questions Answered

with Jonathan Klate, Ph.D., Lic.Ac.

Traditional acupuncture may be the oldest continually practiced medical system in the world. It continues to flourish worldwide today, now endorsed for many conditions by the National Institutes of Health and available in major hospitals and medical centers.

Jonathan Klate has practiced acupuncture for nearly 50 years, following his father, Dr. Reuben H. Klate, into this profession. He introduced acupuncture to this region in 1978 and has continuously practiced in Amherst since then. He will discuss the history, theories, and applications of acupuncture and address questions from attendees.

Check out this podcast about Solo Aging!

Our very own Larry Steinhauser, an active volunteer, Call Manager, and Vice President of the Board, was invited to speak on a local podcast called "Backyard Oasis" by Denise Schwartz. They discuss neighborhood organizations such as Amherst Neighbors, the challenges of asking for help, the beauty and benefits of being a volunteer, the challenges of solo aging and more. It was published November 22, 2024.

Backyard Oasis is a local podcast designed by and for older adults living in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts and produced in the multimedia studios at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA. Backyard Oasis reaches out to older adults who seek knowledge to help them live more thoughtfully, healthily and happily; who hope to inspire others with their ideas; and who serve their communities in the interest of greater good. Join us frequently in the Backyard Oasis for wide-ranging conversations with a diversity of people who are growing older… and want to talk about it!

We need your support

Amherst Neighbors has grown remarkably over the past few years, from a small group of concerned and committed older adults with a shared vision, to a vibrant organization with nearly 650 members.

We are funded entirely by donations and powered by an all-volunteer Board of Directors: a passionate, diverse group of older adults who live right here in our community.

Your generous support is especially important during this time of rapid growth. With your help, we can:

• Sustain and expand our current programs
• Increase outreach to underserved communities
• Explore new funding opportunities and grants
• Deepen our connection with the broader community

Every contribution makes a difference!
